Hassan Hajjaj
Alo Wala in Black2015
Edition: 3 | 5
Hassan Hajjaj, born in 1961 in Larache, Morocco, brilliantly merges bold colors with a blend of global cultures in his modern portraiture. Drawing deeply from street vibrancy and the intricacy of Moroccan textiles, he portrays lively subjects in eclectic attire, juxtaposed within studios of his own making. Each image is uniquely framed using commonplace items, such as soda cans and tea tins, blurring the lines between the ordinary and the artistic. Inspired by legends of African studio photography, Hajjaj masterfully reinterprets identity, combining his Moroccan heritage with contemporary global influences. His distinguished pieces are featured in international collections including the Brooklyn Museum, Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, Victoria & Albert Museum, Institut des Cultures d’Islam, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, and the National Gallery of Victoria, among others. Hajjaj divides his time between London and Marrakesh, continuing to influence and be inspired by both worlds.
